Gender

Most of the monster stories that we read challenged gender roles, especially Dracula. In the story, Lucy gets destroyed by Dracula because she becomes tainted by a blood transfusion from 4 different men. Mina also becomes tainted, but is redeemed because she is the “angel of the house” or the “perfect woman”. Johnathan Harker is supposed to protect his wife, but he can not. This taints him and the only way for him to be redeemed is through his wife. Because she believes in him, he is redeemed. In modern times, the “perfect woman” or “angel of the house” dies first. She is the one that is too trusting and gets killed. The more wild woman, the one who is rough around the edges and who will fight people, is the one who lives, because she saves herself.
