Learning about the Victorians has shown me how much society has not really changed. We like to think that ‘the times are a changin’, and they are, but very slowly. We still have the same institutional things, like government and prison, that have not changed very much at all. When I hear about political things now, I think ‘What would the Victorians do?’ and try to do the opposite. Not because their way of doing things was wrong, but just because I want to move forward. Obviously, some things that the Victorians did were good, like antiseptics, and medical advancements, but there are things that could be better and changed. While we have more technology today, our mindsets are still very Victorian. Maybe that means that people never really change, just their surroundings do. Just a little philosophy for your Tuesday.
